How WHOIS Lookup works

The WHOIS Lookup starts with the top-level domain. For example.com, the TLD is com. Trexmi queries IANA to find the registry WHOIS service associated with that TLD, then sends the domain name to the returned server. If the registry response identifies a registrar WHOIS server, the tool can query that referral as well.

Classic WHOIS uses TCP port 43 and returns plain text. Different registries label the same concept differently, which is why the visual report focuses on common fields while keeping Raw WHOIS available for inspection.

Important WHOIS fields

The registrar identifies the company managing the domain registration for the registrant. Creation, updated, and expiration dates help establish the registration lifecycle, although registries may format dates differently. Nameserver fields describe the DNS servers delegated for the domain at the registry level.

Compare nameserver information with live records using DNS Lookup. A migration can appear incomplete when the registry delegation still points to old nameservers even though DNS records were already prepared elsewhere.

Understanding domain status values

Generic top-level domains can publish EPP status values such as clientTransferProhibited, serverTransferProhibited, or deletion-related states. Transfer locks are common security controls and do not by themselves indicate a problem. Unexpected redemption or pending-delete states deserve immediate attention from the registrar.

WHOIS Lookup displays all status lines returned by the registry instead of reducing them to one value. This makes it easier to preserve the registry response when several controls are active at once.

WHOIS privacy, RDAP, and limitations

Modern public registration data is often redacted. A blank registrant name or email does not mean the domain is unowned. It normally means the registry or registrar does not publish that personal information through public WHOIS.

RDAP is a newer structured registration-data protocol that complements or replaces classic WHOIS. Trexmi first uses direct WHOIS where available and can fall back to the official RDAP service discovered through the IANA bootstrap data when WHOIS is incomplete, unavailable, or blocked. This improves coverage without relying on a commercial third-party API.

WHOIS data is useful for operational diagnostics, but do not treat it as definitive legal ownership evidence. Registration records can be protected by privacy services, proxies, resellers, and jurisdiction-specific policies.
