How IP Address Lookup works

IP Address Lookup validates a public Internet Protocol address and identifies whether it uses IPv4 or IPv6. It also normalizes the address into a canonical representation so equivalent textual forms are easier to compare. This is especially useful with IPv6, where zero compression can produce several valid textual representations of the same binary address.

The tool intentionally blocks private and reserved destinations. It is intended for public network diagnostics rather than probing local infrastructure. The lookup does not require a third-party geolocation API, so it does not invent a city, ISP, or physical location when that information is not available from the local network and DNS checks.

IPv4 and IPv6 addresses

IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses normally written as four decimal octets. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses written in hexadecimal groups and supports compression of consecutive zero groups. Both protocols can identify public Internet destinations, but they use different address formats and may have different DNS records and routing paths.

PTR and forward-confirmed DNS

When possible, IP Address Lookup asks reverse DNS for a PTR hostname. If a hostname exists, Trexmi resolves it forward and checks whether the original address appears in the returned A or AAAA records. Agreement is useful evidence of consistent DNS configuration, but it is not proof of ownership or authentication.

A public IP can work perfectly without a PTR record. Reverse DNS is commonly configured by the provider that controls the address block, and many client or general-purpose addresses do not publish meaningful reverse hostnames.

What the result means

This tool focuses on properties that can be determined directly from the address and DNS. It deliberately does not label a precise geographic location without a geolocation data source. IP geolocation is approximate by nature and should not be confused with GPS or a verified physical address.
